To say that I have an eclectic taste in music is a small understatement. My musical tastes stretch from singers like Norah Jones through to disturbed. I personally think I have an ear for innovative and different music, which has a touch of originality to it.
While I was at university, I new at least a few people who shared much of my taste and I was fairly secure in the knowledge that I liked good music.
Yet here in Colchester, when I try to show my latest discovery to friends, not one of them seems to like what I show them.
To date I have found that everything I have played my current circle of friends from any of these genres of music has been rubbished; Ska, Dub, Nerdcore, Electronica, Shoegaze, hip hop(the intelligent four elements variaty, not the guns, bitchs and bling variaty), drum and base, folk, punk, dubstep, prog-rock and ska-punk.
Seriously, artists from Imogen Heap, Lamb and portishead on the one hand to rancid and the ramones on the other hand are just being blown out of the water. Wow betides me if I try to show them Bikini kill, L7, Zolof the rock and roll destroyer, burial, northern state or MC Chris.
To be honest it is driving me a little nuts. I know that Lamb and Portishead are good on the level that they make me feel all goose bumpy every time I hear it, but I also know that they sold well and received critical acclaim. Yet my friends some how manage to make me feel like a weirdo when every I try to play music.
Anyway, rant over
